Hernan Cortes was chosen by the governor of Cuba to lead an expedition to the mainland of South America
In 1519, Cortes set sail with 11 ship and 530 conquistadors, taking along crossbowmen, riflemen, cannons, horses and dogs
News reached Montezuma that strangers had landed on the coast, he was unsure how to deal with them.
He sent them lavish gifts and a message that they would not be able to meet him in person, trying his best to discourage them from coming to Tenochtitlan
But Cortes would've interpreted this as an attempt to bribe them
In return, Cortes sent back glass ornaments, bracelets and embroidered caps. These gifts were meant to insult Montezuma
