The next day Frederick came down ready to work, but he was stopped because he noticed that Mrs. Auld looked a bit different. She had little horns growing out of her head and claws instead of nails, her hair seemed as red as an apple and so was her face was too. Frederick ignored it for a while. Later on that day in the afternoon Frederick came inside from working outside all day and Mrs. Auld yelled at him. She yelled “WHY HAVEN’T YOU GOTTEN MY GROCERIES YET I THOUGHT I HAD TOLD YOU TO GO RUN MY ERRANDS.” Frederick was so shocked so he replied very nervously with “ I’m sorry miss I will go run your errands now.” Frederick quickly went to go run the errands. When he got back he opened the door and saw a beast in the living room. He ran as fast as he could to get upstairs.
One day Mrs. Auld called Frederick downstairs and asked, “Sweetie have you ever learned to read before?” Frederick replied, “No ma’am.” So on that day Mrs. Auld taught Frederick the basics of reading. A few days passed and Mr. Auld caught Mrs. Auld teaching Frederick to read. Mr. Auld pulled his wife to the kitchen to talk privately. Frederick secretly followed them to listen in on their conversation to see what was going on. He heard Mr. Auld say something about teaching slaves to read was illegal and dangerous. When Mrs. Auld came back into the living room she grabbed the books that were on the table and told Frederick to get back to work.
Frederick hid in a safe spot and began wondering what had happened to Mrs Auld. Frederick thought to himself, maybe Mr. Auld had told her that slaves were bad people and deserve being treated badly. He remembered how nice she was before she got used to owning a slave. Slavery had completely corrupted her! Her heart used to be so kind and full of love but now she is a cruel beast. He wished everything would go back to how it was but he knew nothing would be normal again. All this power she was getting did have a bad impact on her.
