  • "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, butwhen he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.
  • Rising Action (1)
  • “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met.How remark-ably well you are looking today."
  • “we will go back; your health is precious.You are rich, respected, admired, beloved;"
  • Rising Action (2)
  • “Enough,” he said. “The cough’s a mere nothing;
  • Montreser begins to tell the story of how he killed his "friend" Fortunato. He explains how Fortunato has insulted him for many years.
  • Climax
  • I had scarcely laid the first tier of the masonry.
  • Montreser and Fortunato meet at a carnival.
  • Falling Action
  • “For the love of God, Montresor!”
  • Montreser and Fortunato are walking down to the catacombs. Fortunato had a bad cough going down so Montreser tricks him by making Fortunato think that he cares.
  • Resolution
  • For the half of a century, no mortal has disturbed them.In pace requiescat! (Rest in peace.)
  • Montreser chains Fortunato to the wall and starts to block Fortunato in with bricks. Fortunato start's to cry and laugh because he does not know what is going on.
  • Montreser hesitates but puts in the last brick to lock Fortunato in and kill him. Montreser's heart sank but he blames it on the dampness of the catacombs.
  • Montreser telling his story half century later with some regret in his decision.
