The Starving Times was caused by colonists not planting crops.
Jamestown is right by James River and has fertile soil which is good for crops. And why tobacco grew so well here.

Economically James town was not a success until John Rolfe came and planted the cash crop tobacco
That John Rolfe saved us from starvation.
It was surprising that Jamestown was a success for many reasons. When the colonists arrived they did not work to turn Jamestown into a permanent settlement. They did not plant crops and did not keep their water supply clean. Also the native americans in that area were not the most peaceful tribe. But that all changed once John Rolfe arrived because he planted tobacco and created the law of "If you do not work you shall not eat." So Jamestown pulled through and is still here today.
