Ditacae looks like any other poor and squalor Kingdom from the outside, but inside the walled off province are many dark secrets.
Peasants were expected to be in their homes by sundown to keep the crime rate down. Anyone who was caught disobeying the curfew would be harshly punished.
Citizens are assigned an apprenticeship by a local noble upon becoming a teenager, and are expected to work in that field for the remainder of their lives, trading their labor directly with the government for rationed provisions.
Unbeknownst to the regular folk, Ditacae is actually extremely wealthy. The riches of the kingdom, however, are kept a secret among the council of nobles: a hereditary position.
Additionally, a kingdom-wide ban on magic is strictly enforced. Any traveling wizard or magician is hastily arrested or executed. A similar fate awaits anyone who is found to be magical or practicing magic. Magical creatures are killed on sight.
Anti-magic laws are reinforced by telling the citizens fabrications of the horrors of magic: twisted tales of mages abusing their powers and enacting tyranny. With no reason to doubt, and no other sources of news, the people believe these stories.
