One day, Persephone was picking flowers in a beautiful meadow outside Mount Olympus....
....when a hole opened in the ground and Hades, the god of the underworld , appeared. He kidnapped his niece, Persephone, and took her into the underworld to be his queen.
He seated her on a throne of black marble and gave her jewels and precious stones, as cold and hard as heart was becoming. She did not want such things. The underworld's depressing souls game up out of the pits of their misery to see their new queen.
Meanwhile, in the beautiful expanses of the world, the plants began to dull, for the goddess Demeter was in worry. She was the mother of Persephone, and wanted nothing more than her beloved daughter back.
As Demeter turned old and grey, Persephone was still away. The world darkened and Demeter cared little, for her daughter was gone. She begged Zeus to bring her back. Eventually, he agreed and demanded Hades return Persephone to her mother.
Hades agreed to return Persephone. Before she left however, he gave her a pomegranate. Persephone, her hunger taking a toll on her, ate the pomegranate. She then had to stay in the underworld for 1/4 of the year, during this time the world would grow cold. In the end, Persephone was reunited with her beloved mother and the world turned bright once again.
