  • Hello. This is Mesopotamia. It is located in Southwest Asia and it's in modern - day Iraq.
  • The Tigris and Euphrates rivers helped this civilization become successful.
  • These are the foothills of Zagros. The people moved here after their time in Mesopotamia. Because of the lack of space, there was food shortages. After this, they moved to Sumer.
  • This is Sumer. Because of the rivers there was an uncontrolled water supply. Sometimes there was too much water, and most of the time, not enough water.
  • Two solutions to the uncontrolled water supply were: building levees to stop the water from overflowing. The next solution was: building canals to shape the paths the water flowed.
  • This is an irrigation canal. They had to be cleaned from silt. Or particles of rock. The farmers had to clean them regularly. Because the Sumerians communicated and worked so well together, they created towns up to several thousand people.
  • As Sumer grew, more and more people fought over one thing, water.
  • Because the Sumerians were constantly having to work together, like adjusting to bad weather, this made Sumer rise in to a region of human advancement.
