Cronus swallowed his children, Hestia, Demeter, Hera, and Hades because of his mother's vow. His wife and sister, Rhea did not like this treatment of their children. During their sixth child's birth, named Zeus, she slipped off to the cave in Crete and left the infant there in the care of a nymph.

When Zeus grew to manhood, he slipped a herb into his father's food causing him to vomit out the children. The children fled to begin their father's downfall, starting the great battle of the gods. Zeus flew to Tartarus to save Cronus' monster brothers who helped them win the war. After the war, Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades divided the control of the world. Zeus received the heavens and earth, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the underworld. Zeus and his family made their homes on Mount Olympus.

Prometheus, a Titan who helped Zeus against Cronus was given the job of creating man and the animals for earth. Epimetheus, his brother, helped. Epimetheus gave the animals courage, swiftness, warm coats, powerful claws, and wings. Prometheus gave man the gift of fire, civilization, the ability to warm their homes, and make weapons. Zeus was furious at Prometheus because he felt man was now too powerful and might threaten the gods. So he created a woman, Pandora, to weaken man and bounded Prometheus to a rock on mount Caucasus where he was tormented for ages by a vulture that preyed on his liver.
