Storyboard Text

  • Chris' parents watch him get his diploma and they thought he was happy; however, they didn't know that he was going to disappear.
  • As confident as he was, he was not prepared enough for Alaska
  • Chris McCandless isolated himself too quickly.
  • Alaska its cold
  • "In the spring of 1990, when Walt Billie, and Carine attended Chris's graduation ceremony, they thought he seemed happy... He indicated that he was planning another extended trip... (125)" Chris was fed up with family and knew his plan of isolating himself the whole time. He donated all of his money and, as Krakauer writes, "vanished from their lives (125)." We think this is important because it details Chris' ability to destroy relationships.
  • Chris McCandless was determined to leave before he even graduated high school.
  • Owner of the Construction Company
  • "As he trudged expectantly down the trail in a fake-fur parka, his rifle slung over one shoulder... he began a laconic journal on some blank pages in the back of 'Tanaina Plantlore'(162)." Chris McCandless became so in love with the idea of isolation, he didn't properly prepare for Alaska, or for life. The contents of his bag somewhat prove that Chris might have been preparing for death, which then would make him brave. It's enough to be sad but to carry out with it, it takes terrible experiences to get at that point.
  • Chris found joy's in many things, he wasn't some depressed teen.
  • "The prevailing Alaska wisdom held that McCandless was simply one more dreamy half-cocked greenhorn.. state's collective memory" Chris McCandless and many others tried the isolation paths for themselves and didn't succeed. But, they still did it and attempted it and make an impact on society and changed the views of many others which has a big impact on more people trying to isolate themselves. Not only is his isolationism something to debate about, it is also a good life lesson.
  • Krakauer ponders on his life, compared to McCandless'
  • "Nobody anticipated that the journey would be the first in a series of extended transcontinental adventures (116)." McCandless proved himself to be someone who was not afraid of being bold. This boldness, outlines Chris more like a hero, as he did something that most people want to do, but they do not. Chris' bravery and determination is what made him idolized by society.
  • When I mentioned the offer to Chris, he wouldn't even consider it
  • He Told his boss that he had other plans
  • What do you mean
  • (Page 112 - 113. im really tired and i can't really see but that page talks about his motivations.) Chris was motivated by things, such as running, and he tried to get others involved in it as well and he found running very enjoyable. This is important to the story and to Chris mainly because, Chris was questioned a lot for leaving his family and many people thought he was just another depressed kid. However, this can prove that even people who seem happy, need their isolation from society and their minds.
  • "My suspicion that ... from a more personal perspective (134)." McCandless is someone who multiple people, including Krakauer, can relate too. Every body has gone through a rough patch in their life which has lead them to do something for themselves, and McCandless is a representative of those who dare to do something for themselves, for their own greater good. His youthful spirit however, lead to his demise, a similar story for the intended audience who did something dumb while they were young
