More than 30 tribes lived in the Eastern Woodlands in Virginia.
Still, Jamestown remained a unsafe place to live.
That was when the cloud had its silver lining. Another Jamestown leader, John Rolfe experimented on many kinds of tobacco and ways of drying it.
Jamestown saw even more success when the Virginia Company started to give land to people who stayed in the colony seven years.
After the fighting ended, King James made Virginia a royal colony. The king, rather than business people, had control of the colony. But the king ruled too far away from this colony, so, he appointed a royal governor to represent him.
Then in 1619, the first woman colonists arrived.
The first Africans also arrived that same year. As more workers were needed, more Africans came, but instead of paying the Africans, they were made slaves.
Then by 1619 Virginia had more than 1,000 colonists.
WE NEED LAWS!
With so many people Jamestown needed laws. So they set up a legislature.
With selling all this tobacco, the colony needed more land. So, they took land from the Powhatan Confederacy. And the Powhatan Confederacy got mad. So the Jamestown colony and the Powhatan Confederacy went to war. The Jamestown colony lost more than 340 colonists. But the Virginia colony won in an all-out battle to Powhatan Confederacy.
That is the story of how Jamestown colony came to be.
