  • 1776
  • Betsy Ross works as a seamstress, sewing clothes and flags for patriots.
  • June 1776
  • George Washington comes to visit Betsy Ross to ask her to make a flag that will show the American colonies independence. Betsy Ross draws out a sketch of the flag. 
  • 1776
  • Betsy makes the first American flag and motivates people to continue working towards their independence.
  • She is chosen to make a new flag with 15 stars. They added more stars to represent the new states.
  • 1795
  • January 30, 1836
  • Betsy Ross dies at the age of 84. After retiring she grew ill and the illness eventually took her life.
  • 1870
  • William Canby tells the world how his grandmother made the first American flag.  It is not known if she was actually the one to make the first American flag this is just what her grandson claimed 50 years after she died. I do believe that she was the one to make the first flag.
  • Present Day
  • Even though no one knows if she made the first flag, who is the first person you think of when someone says the American flag? You would most likely think of Betsy Ross, so even if she didn't make the first flag she still plays an important roll in history.
