In chapter one, we learned that the main character, Kino, had some financial problems. Due to this, he was not able to afford to take his family to the doctors, or even pay for education. Later into the chapter we were introduced to the main conflict, Kino's son, Coyotito got bit by a scorpion. Because their family didn't have much money, they were not able to afford for their son to get medical help.
This scene shows when all of Kino's hopes have been answered. Kino has found a massive pearl that can help their family afford care for Coyotito. So many opportunities opened up for their family after finding this pearl, but could it all be for the better?
Kino starts to imagine all the things that he could do with the money he could make from the pearl. He is planning on getting a rifle, education for Coyotito, and he wants to get married to his wife. Kino is getting eager and his whole family is looking forward to their life ahead of them.
