He was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. Every part of him was defined small, strong hands, slender arms, a thin bony nose. ''No--look! I was jus' foolin', Lennie. 'Cause I want you to stay with me.''
He was the opposite, a huge, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide , sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily. ''If you don' want me I can go off in the hills an' find a cave.''
A tall, stoop-shouldered old man came in. He was dressed in blue jeans and he carried a big push-broom in his left hand. ''When they can me here I wish somebody'd shoot me. But they won't do nothing like that. I won't have no place to go, an' I can't get no more jobs.''
His body was bent over to the left by his crooked spine, and his eyes lay deep in his head, and because of their depth seemed glitter with intensity. His lean face was lined with deep black wrinkles. ''No--look! I was jus' foolin', Lennie. 'Cause I want you to stay with me.''
She had full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her fingernails were red. Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages. She wore a cotton hose dress and red mules, on the in steps of which were little bouquets of red ostrich feathers. ''Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely.''
