  • Light passes through the aqueous humour
  • Light enters the eye through the cornea
  • The Iris is the coloured part of the eye. Its muscles contract and expand to control the amount of light that enters the eye
  • Light passes through the pupil
  • Light reaches the lens , which is used to focus light onto the retina
  • Photoreceptors are neurons that detect and respond to light by converting electromagnetic energy into neural impulses
  • Light reaches the retina (which contains photoreceptors)
  • Rods are used for night vision and peripheral vision. They are more sensitive than cones
  • Fovea is a small cup-shaped area, packed with cones. Sharpest images are those focussed on the fovea
  • Cones are used for daylight vision, seeing fine detail and colour vision. They do not operate well in dull light
  • Neural impulses from photoreceptors are carried to the brain via the optic nerve.
