- Johnsy and Sue are two young artists who share a small flat. Johnsy fell seriously ill in November .

- Oh dear Johnsy ! I think you have pneumonia . I'm very worried . i shall send for the doctor.
- Johnsy seems very upset. She has made up her mind that she does not want to get better. If she doesn't want to live , medicines won't help her.

- Do you see that creeper. It had almost a thousand leaves three days ago. Now there are only five left. I will die when the last leaf falls
- That's nonsense. You are not going to die because of that. Try to sleep. I'll paint and bring us money . I'll call Behrman to be my model

- Sue went to meet Behrman and explain the situation.
- How can she be so foolish? I will come to the room with you to see .
