Douglass and Covey kept fighting hitting each other but Douglass hitting him more and harder. Soon the fight got the attention of the slaves and slave owners. The slaves cheer on the fight rooting for Douglass because this the first time they have ever seen a slave stand up against a slave owner. Eventually Covey called out for one of the slave owners called Hughes. Hughes heard Covey and came to the fight and went to jump in and stop the fight. When he jumped in Douglass went and WAM! He hit a heavy kick right under his ribs which sickened him to the point where Hughes left the fight and let Covey deal with Douglass.
As the fight continues slaves filter out to go back to work but Douglass and Covey both continue to fight. As they fight Covey calls out another slave owner. The slave owner named Bill hears him and comes over to help but sees how much damage Covey has taken and how little damage Douglass has taken. He starts watching the fight trying not to get hurt. Covey was furious with Bill and starts yelling at him saying “Take hold of him, take hold of him!” but Bill continues watching him fight and soon leaves to let Covey deal with Douglass all by himself.
Eventually Douglass wins the fight against Covey and never gets whipped again and every time he thinks of trying to whip him he says that he will fight him with even more power. Winning the fight changed his life forever he now felt that he had some type of freedom and had the determination of being free again. He had a resurrection from being trapped in slavery to having freedom and his spirit was resurrection. Now that he won even though he was still a slave he had hope that he will eventually become free once in his entire life.
