Jamestown was located in Virginia, out of all the places they could have settled they chose a swamp. This was not the best place to settle since the ground is mushy and droughts could happen, there were also mosquitoes that carried diseases that could kill people. This is one of the many reasons on why people were shocked that Jamestown was a success.
In the time of Jamestown their economy was not the same as nowadays. Therefore they traded cash crops and gold for their economy to gain "income". In the picture shown above a gentlemen is trading his corn for gold, back then the people in Jamestown would trade with the Indians, they did not only trade gold, they also traded supplies like weapons.
In this photo above there is shown four men, the man in the hat is the representative. The other men are settlers who also contribute to making the colony better. They are about to decide what to do next in Jamestown.
The people of Jamestown also had indentured servants, but they also had slaves. Indentured servants were people who would sign a contract saying that they would work ( usually 7 years) for several years for an exchange to go to Jamestown from England. Slaves were basically workers for who ever their owner was, and would most likely not be free.
