  • In chapters 15 and 16 of The Giver, Jonas is introduced to emotional pain, and warfare.  This is a very powerful chapter in the book as Jonas had been exposed to a sweet, easy-going life, and now he must bear to see someone die right in front of him, from deprivation of water, which Jonas had never encountered.
  • Please... Help me... I need water.
  • Jonas had lived a life full of happiness, and equality. No pain, sadness- and no snow activities. In chapters 13 and 14, Jonas finds himself back in the memory of snow, and sledding. Eager to start the trip, he pushes down the hill. He starts to lose control of the sled, causing him to tumble out and feel the worst pain yet- a broken leg.
  • In the community, Jonas starts to see colors, but only glimpses. He is confused by the fact that the rest of the community can't see these colors, and its at this point in the story Jonas starts becoming suspicious of the tresures the community could be hiding from the people.
