In 1854 the U.S attempted to buy Cuba from Spain. Spain stated that they'd rather see Cuba sink into the ocean.
Jose Marti was a Cuban poet and journalist who started a revolution in 1895 against Spain. He was then kicked out of Cuba at the age of 16.
