Born on the 10th of Novmeber 1483 Eisleben, Martin Luther grew up in middle-class family. He was pressured by his father to become a lawyer so he attended law school.
During the time Martin Luther was studing law he was struck by lightning. He considered it a sign from God and stopped his studies to become a monk.
At this time the Roman Catholic Church was the only religion accepted in Europe. When the very wealthy Pope Leo X wanted to move St Peter's Balsilica he decided to sell indulgences (forgiveness of sins) to pay for the costs.
The bible was only written in Greek and Latin so not many people could not read the bible. However Luther could and when he read it he was outraged by the Church as there was no writing in the Bible that allowed the moral selling of indulgences.
Luther wrote his 'Ninety-Five Theses' which were his complaints of the Church. He nailed them to the door of the All Saints Church in Wittenburg. Luther's 'Ninety-Five Theses' as well as his translation of the Bible to German rapidly spread across Europe via the printing press resulting in people started riots and burning down religious buildings. This also made people begin to question their believe in the Church
Luther was summoned to the 'Diet of Worms' which was a general assembly of the Holy Roman Empire. Luther was asked if he was the Author of the Ninety-Five Theses and if he stood by the contents of them to which he replied yes.
