Vikings were once peaceful farmers living in Scandinavia. When farmland became scarce, the Vikings traveled to Europe to attack villages.
We want your gold and silver!
After some Vikings did not want to travel to England, they explored other lands. In 861, a Viking named Naddod ran into a storm that pushed there boat to present day Iceland. News spread and soon 30,000 traveled to Iceland.
In 980, Erik Thorvaldsson murdered 2 men. He gathered a crew and left Iceland to explore. He went to the west and found a new land.
Look at this new land! Call it Greenland!
A Viking named Bjarni came to Iceland looking for his family. Vikings there told him to sail to Greenland. Soon after setting sail, Bjarni's ship was blown off course, but Bjarni's crew moved and find Greenland.
Wrong place! Let's keep moving!
Though Erik never found the land Bjarni spoke about, his son Lief traveled to North America. But after Lief left Vinland, not many Vikings ventured to there again.
