Devion Drake, a highly recruited student athlete was recently asked a question for a newspaper about how he felt about the NBA’s “One and Done” rule. He decided to ask his homeroom teacher, Mr. Jefferson, for advice.
Hey teach I was wondering whether you think this “One and Done” rule is fair. I don’t really care about the rule but I don’t want to sound ignorant, can you give me some insight ?
Tell me Mr. Drake, have you ever heard of the American Dream ?
Yea but what does that have to do with anything?
Throughout history, the American Dream has changed but there has been one common theme, controlling your own success. When big corporations interfere, you’re not in control
The American Dream is social mobility, being able to improve your situation. Our Founding Fathers modeled this country so that all its citizens are able to achieve this
You have a point but…
No of course not, but don’t you think you have the right to declare for the draft when you feel it’s best for you and your family ? What if you get injured or don't play well and your stock goes down
Are u saying that the American Dream is not attainable for me
That is true, I think that in reality, this rule is just delaying the process but when you think about it, based off the principle of what the American Dream means they are restricting my ability to be successful. Timing is important and they’re limiting my opportunity to take advantage of the hype I’ve managed to build around my name.
