I am going to sign a contract to be a voyageur since my dad can't because he cut his thumb and they won't allow him to be a steersmen because he is injured.
I have the shivers after leaving St. Annes because it was very eerie. I am getting along with the brigades pretty well but my muscles are sore and I am very tired. I feel kind of homesick but I have to keep going for my dad.
My brigade decided to take the portage because they thought the rapids were to dangerous. The backpacks were really heavy, I struggled because the men in the brigade put musket balls in my pack and made a bet on whether or not I could make it to the end.
We are now crossing Lake Superior! The big waters were pretty scary since it was so cold and some of the waves were big so it got into the boat and we almost sank. It was so cold I had to think of good times from back home to cheer me up a bit, like swimming with my friends at the company landing, and and sailing hand carved boats with my sisters.
We made it to Grand Portage! When I saw the trading posts I felt so relieved, no more paddling. It felt so good to see the trading posts and think: I did it. If my dad could see me right now he would be so proud. There were some tough times but we did it.
I am returning back to Lachine. I am returning back home so I can see my family. I really liked being a voyageur so I am going to sign on again next year, I liked hanging out with the men in the brigade and I promised Kennewah I would come next June.
