The Bittering Family arrives on Mars. The father of the family, Harry, isn't very excited to be living on Mars, and wants to go back almost immediately.
Harry Bittering begins to notice the changes in the food on Mars. He noticed things like extra petals, and leaves on a peach blossom plant, some carrots, onions, and radishes. He went to his wife Cora for a second opinion, but she doesn't seem to notice anythings wrong.
Harry Bittering is still set on going back to Earth, since the rockets were destroyed, Harry is thinking of building his own rocket. He approaches some other people with his plan, and they simply laugh at him. They wonder why he wants to go back to Earth, Mars is just fine. They also mention that Harry has a few golden flakes in his eyes.
The Bittering are beginning to change even more. The wife, Cora is getting darker, and now has yellow eyes. The children were metallic, and Harry began getting taller and thinner. They have also begun speaking Martien language uncontrollably.
One of the children, Dan, has begun speaking Martien more often, and his brain has stopped answering to the name Dan. He requests a new name, "Linnl" Harry Bittering eats a sandwhich consisting of Mars food.
Five years later, a rescue team comes to gather up the civilization of Earth people to bring back to Earth, as the war had just ended. The Bitterings and the rest of the humans on Mars have officially gone full Martien.
