African American Dred Scott sued for his freedom in the supreme court
The court ruled by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney that Scott had no right to file a court case because Scott was not a citizen and that an enslaved person was property and the fifth amendment prohibits congress from taking away property without due progress, also the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional
The ruling angered Republicans, further dividing the nation
