- Good Afternoon, I am Miss Rushmore of the Department of Child Welfare, Bureau of Family Assistance. Is Mrs. Luby at home?
- Mom Luby is an old woman who takes care of Elijah and Arlethia. She has been selflessly supporting both children, ever since their mother died three years ago.
- LOVE AND FAMILY RELATIONSHIP
- Tonight I got to go deliver a baby. Then I got to go visit a sick old lady and work on her with some herbs. Then I got to go down to the courthouse and get a young man out of jail... Then I got to preach a funeral.
- Mom Luby, wanting to give Elijah and Arlethia a better life, went down to the Department of Child Welfare Services to request state aid.
- LOVE AND FAMILY RELATIONSHIP
- The Department of Child Welfare Services sent a representative to see if Mom Luby is suitable to receive state aid. She started by asking Mom Luby questions about budget and financial planning, but Mom Luby diverts from the interview with casual talk.
- LOVEANDFAMILY RELATIONSHIP
- Mom Luby further explained to Miss Rushmore that she helps out her community as best as she can. However, she is not paid for her services and is in need of state aid to better support her family.
- Miss Rushmore accompanied Mom Luby on her duties and they returned home. They went into the speakeasy where Miss Rushmore told Mom Luby that she is not qualified for state aid.
- Mom Luby and everyone in the speakeasy laughed Miss. Rushmore out the door. She may not have gotten the state aid, but she continues to persevere through hardships. The love they have for one another is enough for them to survive.
