This sounds like there using the Scientific Method. Martha made an Observation and so did Ted.
Hey, your plant is bigger than mine and we've had the plant for the same time. It's also the same plant.
Well it's been raining at my house every day and your house every other day. I wonder if that effects the plant's growth.
Now they are passed step one and onto step two of the scientific method, Ask A Question. Also known as a Problem. Problem- a clear and concise statement of the problem, usually stated as a question. It looks like Martha asked the Question this time.
Does the amount of rain a plant gets effects it's grow?
Let's find out.
Looks like there onto step three,Make A Hypothesis. A Hypothesis is an educated guess or prediction of the outcome of the controlled study or experiment. Ted made the Hypothesis.
So do I, but let's experiment.
I think my plant is going to grow higher than yours.
Now were on to step four, Conduct Your Experiment. Manipulated Variable-the one condition that the experimenter changes to test the hypothesis. Dependent Variable- the condition that is used to measure the manipulated variable(time, length, speed...). Controlled Variable- the conditions that must be held constant so as to not to influence the out come of the experiment.
For this experiment the Manipulated Variable is the amount of rain the two plants get. The Controlled Variable is the plant. The Dependent Variable is the plants growth at the end of the experiment.
We'll also need Materials( a list of items needed to conduct the experiment), and we'll have to conduct a Procedure (a plan for organizing and conducting the experiment. A step by step plan of action.)
They are now onto step five, Draw Conclusions. Observation: Collect and Record Data- statements concerning what actually is seen taking place. Observations recorded in the form of notes, journal entries, photos, charts, and graphs. Conclusion- the answer to the problem stated in the beginning of the experiment. It may or may not support the Hypothesis.
Well it turned out that my plant grew higher than Martha's. Our hypothesis was correct.
Well now were on to step six, Report Your Results. Martha and Ted reported their results by making this experiment there science project.
