  • Welcome to the Great Barrier Reef. This reef supports thousands of species.
  • As we release carbon into our atmosphere our oceans heat up.
  • A change from 32 to 33 degrees Celsius can be devastating.
  • as waters warm coral expels the algae that feeds it and gives it its color.
  • From here the bone of the coral is exposed and easily dies. The coral provides homes for thousands of species.
  • The fish from a relationship with the coral like the clownfish who uses it for protection, but once the coral dies they must leave
  • In 2016 29-34% of the Great Barrier reef bleached and ended up dead
  • The loss of coral represents a loss of up to $375 billion annually for global economies.
  • This is devastating for places like Australias west coast whos economy depends on the Great Barrier reef.
  • At this point, our only hope is to protect what we have left. We need to make laws around the release of carbon dioxide into the environment and collect and protect the species that haven't gone extinct.
