As a peasant I was a serf. As a serf I was tied down to my land. I was not a slave, but I was not free. I am not allowed to leave the manor without my lords permission.
I serve my lord a lot but in turn I receive protection and farming land. I must farm for my lord and I also have to repair parts of the kingdom. When marrying, inheriting land, or on Christmas I must pay fees. In turn for this I will receive protection from wars and raids.
Us peasants produced everything. We made food, clothes, and furniture. This was important for us because if others relied on us that meant we were important and needed to be protected.
During my life, I never traveled out more than 1 mile or 2. I did not receive schooling and do not have much education. I dont know much about the outside world either.
Life is very harsh for me and my family. We have to work from sunrise to sundown. We ate simple food such as black bread, with some vegetables.
We lived in small houses that we shared with cattle. If we lived near a river we could eat fish. Poaching was a better option for food but it brought the risk of a very harsh punishment.
