John Motley helped the new public school system, extending railroad, river and harbor improvements and constructing canals and turnpikes, but the Democrats in the state legislature passed few of those measures. John Motley supported creation of a school for deaf people, which would be named in his honor.
John Morehead expressed interest in establishing a port city. In 1853, before the North Carolina Legislature provided partial funding for railroad construction across the state, John Morehead visited Carteret to study. Impressed by the location and potential of Shepard’s Point, Morehead purchased six hundred acres of property from the Arendell family. With that property, the Shepard Point Land Company was formed, and on November 11, 1857, the first lots were sold.
