  • Union Political Leaders
  • "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, on this continent..."
  • Union Military Leaders
  • Union Militray Strategy
  • As the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln led the Union during the Civil War. Although he did oppose slavery, Lincoln's ultimate goal was to keep the Union together. President Abraham Lincoln would be assassinated at the end of the Civil War while attending a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.
  • Industrial North
  • One of the most important military leaders during the Civil War is a man by the name of Ulysses S. Grant. He would lead the first major battle in the west during the battle of Shiloh. Grant would also win a huge victory during the Siege of Vicksburg, an important stronghold for the North and the South. General Robert E. Lee surrenders to Grant's army in 1865.
  • Finances
  • Whatever shall I do with all this money?
  • The Anaconda plan was suggested by Winfield Scott to “slowly choke and suffocate the South”. As opposed to the Confederate's more defensive strategy, the Anaconda plan was fully offensive. The plan would impose a blockade to halt Southern trade with the world. Meanwhile, the army would capture its vital cities in the South and the capital of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia.
  • Raising an Army
  • As a result of the industrial revolution in the North, the South was at a disadvantage when it came to some technologies. For one thing, 90% of the nation’s factories reside in the North, meaning easier access to clothing, boots, weaponry. Additionally, 72% of the nation’s railroad tracks are in the North, making the transportation of people and goods more efficient.
  • War is very costly and requires a lot of resources to purchase supplies, such as ammo, guns, and food. The North was at an advantage when it came to finances because they had access to the National Treasury and bank reserves. The South, on the other hand, could not purchase government bonds, imposed heavy taxes as an attempt to finance the war.
  • For an army to be effective, there need to be many people who are willing to fight for a cause. The North, with its population of 22 million, had an advantage when it came to raising an army and supporting the war efforts. Meanwhile, the South only had 11 million people, with 1/3 of that number being part of the enslaved population.
