The Younger family live in a very small apartment in Chicago, Illinois. Big Walter has died and there is a $10,000 life insurance check due to arrive soon. Walter hopes to use it for a liquor store, other family members hopes to use for mama, but Mama isn't sure what she will do with it.
Mama decides to buy a house in Clybourne Park, which is an all white neighborhood. Walter feels no one listening to him about his business ideas that's because Mama has been refusing to give him money to invest. Everyone, except Walter, are excited about moving into the house.
Mama decides to gives Walter the $6,500 to use $3,000 to put aside for Beneatha's medical schooling and other $3,500 to invest in his business. Mr. Lindner visited to Walter's house and offers them a significant amount of money to stay out of the neighborhood, but they reject.
Walter finds out from Bobo that Willy Harris took all of the money they gave him for the liquor store business and ran. Which then makes Walter look worse because he never put aside the $3,000 that he was supposed to put into the bank for Beneatha's medical school tuition.
Walter calls Mr. LInder and accepts his offer in order to recoup some of the money that was lost. After looking at his family and having final discussions with his son, Travis, and the others Walter decides not to trade his pride for money and therefore tells Mr. Linder to leave.
Finally, the Youngers leave the apartment and officially move into their home in Clybourne Park. Mama's dream of a happy family moving into a house that they own has come true. All the family member give mama a presents and Travis, the youngest, gives her a big hat.
