  • In 1961 Kennedy's Bay of Pigs Invasion failed.  CIA recruited around 1500 Cuban Exiles.  Most were captured or killed.  It was considered a Cuban victory.  It led Cuba to become aware of the USA.  This led the Kennedy Administration to rethink there Cuba policy.
  • Cuba reached out to Russia for support.   The USSR was a fellow communist nation.  They also were going against the USA in the Cold War.  They sent over 36 ICBM.  These were discovered by U2 spy planes in 5 locations.
  • In thirteen days in October 14, 1962 had the US on high tensions.  The public was worried.  They stocked up bomb shelters.  They also followed media coverage.  This was one of the closes times war broke out.
  • Current President JFK was still facing a failed Bay of Pigs.  He worked long days to end the problem. On the 22nd he made an anoucment to the public about the missiles.  ExCom helped make a decision.   He made it clear he would use military force.
  • The president used a naval blockage to stop Russia ships.  Just off the coast of Florida, they deployed on the 24th.  Same day the Soviets sent out a broadcast.  The USA raised the alert level in response.  The president began communication via hotline to Russia.
  • After some diplomacy the USA and Russia avoided war.  The missiles were removed when the USA promised not to invade Cuba.  6 months later missiles that the USA had stationed in Turkey were removed.  Although these were outdated.  Many view this well handled by the USA.
