Demeter and her daughter Persephone loved nothing more than to spend time together. Persephone was picking flowers for her mother when she smelled an exquisite perfume that caught her attention. She followed the scent.
Hades was dazzled by Persephone's beauty, and wanted her as his wife. With an okay from Zeus he decided to abduct her. The world went black and their was a big crack as a chasm opened up. Hades snatched her in his chariot.
Persephone cried and cried at first. She refused all morsels of food, for she was scared she would become stuck in the underworld. One day Hades came and took Persephone's hand to show her the world in which she could rule as queen, if married.
Demeter was beside herself, the plants were not thriving. One day Helios told her everything that had happened to Persephone. Demeter strode to the top of Mount Olympus for something to be done. Zeus would send down Hermes.
Hermes was too late to the underworld. Persephone had taken a bite of six seeds from a pomegranate. Hades was scared she would fade out if she didn't. So Persephone became queen.
So it was, since Persephone ate six seeds she ruled with Hades for six months out of the year starting at fall. Where Demeter cried making the leaves fall. Then at spring Demeter always had flowers bloomed to welcome Persephone, for six months too.
