Oh wow look at that expensive outfit! She looks so different without her work uniform.
Melissa and Rita met while working at a coffee shop. Rita's parents wanted her to get work experience while in high school, while Melissa needed money for survival as she was living on her own below the Poverty Line, the poverty line is a number determining now much income is necessary to live with basic needs.
Hey Rita, I'm good, how are you?
Yeah Sure!!
Hi Melissa! How are you?
I'm sooo hungry! How do you feel about a sandwich at "Crazy Nicks"
Melissa experiences class consciousness as she realizes more and more that she does not belong in the same class as Rita. With the help of her Human Capital (useful skill) and her mothers Social Capital (social network), she was able to raise her chances into being accepted at Harvard. What Melissa is going through is class
I cant believe you're going to Harvard Law! That's great.
How so?
Thank you! Although I worked hard in school I owe it partially to my mom.
My mom knows lots of the staff there, and she got me in with some great tutors through the years.
Oh I am so sorry to hear that, your mother and father can't help you out in this situation?
Rita realizes that Melissa is below the poverty line and living on her own, thus breaking some myths she thought about the poor. Melissa still works very hard at the coffee shop in trying to earn money to sustain herself, and when she gets the chance she will make sure to go to school!!
And so where are you planning on going to school?
Ah well, you know, I'm not sure if I'm going to go next year. I'm struggling right now, I won't have enough money to get myself into university.
You know, they're not all that present in my life right now, I'm ageing out of foster care.
Melissa being the first to attend post secondary learning places her as intragenerational mobility, compared to Rita experiencing intergenerational mobility which means social mobility throughout generations.
Whether I am struggling or not, I'm hoping at some point to be the first of my family to go to university!
It's great to hear how motivated you are!!
Melissa now understands that Rita only knows many of the myths of poverty. So she explains that a state of mind is an effect of poverty, not a cause, and that she is pushing through those emotions, as the "culture of poverty" is a state of mind shared by people and families living in poverty, as she continues to go to work and school!
The "culture of poverty" is something very real and you can easily be sucked in but I'm glad to have you in my social network to keep me going!
I'm so glad to hear that you're working through it! I'm always here.
After lunch, Rita has now found a new perspective on how certain people live, making sure that she will not be taking her benefits for granted! She loved spending time with Melissa and learning about how hard she works.
I hope we get to do this again it was so fun!
Yes it was Thanks so much for sharing everything you did! Such a different perspective!
