There were two main points of Reconstruction, Presidential and Radical Reconstruction. President Lincoln has Reconstruction all planned out, but he was killed, so Andrew Johnson took over as president. His point of view was that the southern states should enter the union on their own. Johnson did not believe that African Americans can manage on their own and that the southern states should be allowed to pass the black codes again. He believed that African Americans should not have the right to vote and all their rights should be taken away. Radical Reconstruction was Republicans, Northerners, and the Military which believed that that African Americans deserved the same rights as whites. They believed that Confederates should be punished for the Civil War. The radical republicans passed the Civil Rights Bill of 1866, which gave African Americans equal rights to whites. The 14th amendment was passed which gave African Americans citizenship and in turn gave them the right to vote. They passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867 which blocked former leading Confederates from running office and voting.
White League and KKK
Black codes were state laws passed in the South during Reconstruction. The laws were meant to restrict the right to vote, to free speech, to fair and equal treatment, citizenship, and freedom of African Americans. This affected the freedmen because they suffered being controlled.
The two points of the Radical Reconstruction was that they wanted to punish Confederates for the Civil War and for their action they wanted all blacks to have the same rights as whites.
Compromise of 1877
The White League and KKK was a group of men that tried to demolish republicans and intimidate freedmen and black men. They thought that republicans were wrong and they should be punished and blacks and freedmen should not have rights. The terrorist organization had an impact on the freedmen because they murdered hundreds of republicans and freedmen and they took away all of the rights they gained, The group ended in 1876 after the government passes laws and acts to overturn them.
The freedmen's bureau was a group of freed men that took and stand and were a voice for the voiceless poor people and former slaves. They went around a provided housing, food, medical needs, and most importantly education for the former slaves and built schools.
The Compromise of 1877 was going to end to reconstruction, which at the end of reconstruction former slaves would have their rights taken away. Former slaves were no longer able to vote segregation was also put into play and it would be years and years before this changed.
