During the first Summer mentioned in the book, Jem & Scout meet Dill who has awful interesting stories, although not quite believable, he brings something new to the group, a sense of curiosity that gets both Jem & Scout to do things they wouldn't dream of before including going near the Radley place.

The kids see what they think is a hurt dog & run to tell Calpurnia. She recognizes it as a mad dog & warns the street. Everyone but the kids know about ole Ole shot
Jem has to read to Mrs.Maudie as punishment for destroying her flowers.
