In these three scenes from the rising action in the excerpt from the book "Three Skeleton Key" written by George G. Toudouze, the men are already very frightened that the rats will get into the lighthouse and at this point they could easily enter as the rats have been eating away at every closed entrance possible for re-entry. As the three men slept one of the windowsills gave through and rats began flooding in trampling Itchoua. They then all began running to the next room to hide from the rats. They barely were able to rescue Ithoua before he was eaten alive. However, they made it to the room and only a few rats got in which they easily killed with their knives. There they had to wait until help came for them.
