  • Stephen Douglass passes a bill to divide Kansas and Nebraska into two separate territories with popular sovereignty to decide whether they would become free or slave states.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act.
  • "Border Ruffians" rush to influence the future of Kansas and Nebraska in March 1855 when they held an election for territorial legislature.
  • Violence was used to gain Kansas. A proslavery group burned down an antislavery headquarter, destroyed two newspaper presses, and looted stores and homes on May 21, 1856.
  • The Sacking of Lawrence
  • The Pottawatomie Massacre
  • Once the news from Lawerence reached John Brown, he immediately took action and sought out his revenge.
