As Frederick wandered around the forest he met a man named Sandy. Sandy was a kind man who was going to see his wife a few miles away. “Sandy I have ran away from my master, Covey” said Frederick. “ I want to go back to Covey's plantation, but I know Covey will beat me, or worse. What should I do?” Sandy thought for a moment wondering about the best outcome for Frederick, and then he said “ Frederick follow me I have something to give to you”. As Frederick walked with Sandy to the location he asked Sandy “ What are you giving me Sandy?” “ Well Frederick I am giving you a magical root that shall protect you from Coveys whip”.
After Frederick got some rest after a long night in the forest he trekked back towards Covey's plantation. As Frederick leaped over the fence he noticed his acquaintances staring directly at him in shock. While Frederick was walking to the cornfield he saw a glimpse of Covey staring directly at him. He soon turned his direction and started to proceed towards Covey. Covey was holding a hickory slat. The same one he whipped Frederick with in the barn. Then Covey said in a spine chilling voice “I will stoke you so hard you will scream as loud as a rooster!”
As Frederick approached into Covey's range Covey said “ I will beat you to next morning!” Then Covey struck Frederick with the hickory slat, Frederick knew he had to defend himself so he blocked the strike with his arm. As the fight continued on the two were in the dirt wrestling for almost two hours. Covey grew exhausted and gave up, he then walked away in shame. This gave Frederick a new look into the world, he told himself he would never act like a slave ever again. From that day forward Covey never messed with him again.
