Cassia: Cassia is a very loving and caring person who will do anything for the people she cares about. She is also very determined to reach her goals. That being said, she is very naive about the struggles she will have to face in the real world.
"She opened my hand and put the compass inside. 'We had the same artifact. And now we both have the same son'" (21). "And then I gave it to Cassia to keep" (21).
Indie: Indie is generally selfish and worries only about herself. She makes decisions based on survival rather than emotions. She is very cunning and sly, and also a very determined person.
"I lean closer and see that his lips are stained blue. ... He doesn't breathe" (163).
One may have to face challenges for love, but it will be worth it in the end. In the book, Cassia and Ky each make sacrifices for each other; Cassia runs away to the canyon to search for Ky, and Ky agrees to join the Rising with Cassia. To them, these sacrifices were worth it in order to be together.
"I jump out and pull the boat over to the side ... and the two of us hold our breath" (344-345).
For Ky, the compass symbolizes the people he loves. It belonged to his mother, who sadly died, but the compass remains a reminder of her. It also belonged to his aunt Aida, his adoptive mother, and it serves as a reminder of her as well. Lastly, he gave it to Cassia as a symbol of his love for her.
This is foreshadowing for when Cassia and Indie find out that the blue tablets are poisoned. They then realize that the boy they found had died from eating the blue tablets, not because he was too late to eat them.
When Cassia and Indie are rowing down the river, they see an aircraft flying overhead. This creates suspense because the reader doesn't know if Cassia and Indie will be caught or not. If they are caught, something bad will likely happen to them, which adds to the suspense of this part.
