After the summer Jem tells Scout that he found his pants neatly folded when he went back for them. Coming back from school the kids start to find treasures in the knot hole of the tree in the Radley house, but one day Mr. Nathan covered it saying the tree was dying.
In the first time in years it snowed in Maycomb County so Jem and Scout get to making a snowman. Later in the night there is a fire in Miss Maudie's house. The kids stand away from the danger and when no one saw Boo put a blanket over Scout.
Atticus took a trial defending a black man and everyone started to talk bad about him. Scout was asked not to get into any fights if anyone called Atticus names, but on Christmas day when visiting her uncle Jack and aunt Alexandra she fought Francis for saying things about Atticus.
Scout and Jem are ashamed of Atticus because he is not as cool as their friends fathers. But one day there is a wild dog lose and Atticus must shoot it, and in his first shot he hits the dog. The kids then are more thankful for their father after Miss Maudie told them stories of Atticus' nickname.
Jem passes by, Mrs. Dubose she shouts at him saying stuff about Atticus, he got mad started to break and trash Mrs. Dubose's bushes. Jem's punishment was to go everyday for a month to read to her and regrow her bushes. Later Jem finds out Mrs. Dubose was a drug addict and was slowly dieing.
