John Rolfe a settler began to grow a new type of tobacco using a seed from the West Indies. Which after that in England smoking became popular so the colonists found they could sell as much tobacco as they could.
In 1619, a ship arrived from Africa carrying 20 Africans. They were slaves to help grow more crops. As the plantations grew bigger they needed more slaves. Therefore, more slaves were brought to the English Colonies in America.
Captain John Smith a former English soldier became the leader of the settlement. He told the colonists to plant crops and work together. Smith said to the workers, "If you don't work, you shall not eat." By him enforcing them to work they got more unified. John Smith was injured in a gunpowder explosion and had to return to England in 1609.
The location of Jamestown is up the James River, in Virginia, where Jamestown was founded. Jamestown was settled on a Peninsula which made it easier to defend. The land was swampy and the drinking water was unhealthy. Where the colony settled it had fertile soil to grow crops. And the swamp had mosquitos which had a disease.
