  • The Reign of Justinian I
  • The reign of Justinian I
  • Constantinople was very far from the center of the Roman Empire, and mostly surrounded by water. It was home to nearly 1 million people at one point.
  • The eastern orthodox church
  • Justinian had a long reign that lasted from 527 to 565. He put down a rebellion in 532 from a group of people that denouced him while at a chariot race. The battles killed about 30,000 people and it left constantinople destroyed.
  • Eastern orthodox church
  • Justinian wanted to rebuild constantinople, so he used a ton of money to rebuild many things.
  • Conflict Between East and West
  • Christianity was the foundation to the Byzantine empire. The religion was based on a set of beliefs that its leaders traced back to Jesus Christ and to the work of bishops in early Christian councils.
  • Christian faith inspired magnificent works of architecture and art in the Byzantine Empire. With its square base and high dome, Hagia Sophia served as a model for many Orthodox churches.
  • The eastern half of the empire had many cities, much trade, and great wealth. The western half was mostly rural and agricultural, and not nearly as wealthy. The west was influenced by Frankish and Germanic cultures. In Constantinople, people spoke Greek. In the west, Latin was the language of scholars, diplomats, and the church.
