Storyboard Text

  • Before Russia's reform, their tsar, Alexander I , sponsored the Holy Alliance idea at the Congress of Vienna.
  • So what if...
  • This alliance set between Russia, Prussia, and Austria was to defend both religion and the established order. In the long run, it never accomplished much.
  • Russia mainly avoided the spread of revolutions through Europe. However, the ruling elite continued to welcome Western artistic styles and ideas.
  • When Alexander II came to power, one of the first things he did in the way of reform was emancipate the serfs. This helped to create a larger urban work force.
  • Another major area of change was the army. The recruitment of soldiers was extended, allowing peasants to join and learn from the military.
  • In the 1870s, the trans-Siberian railroad was established and connected European Russia with the Pacific. It largely stimulated expansion of their economy.
