The triangle shirtwaist factory was making shirtwaist when suddenly the eighth floor was on fire.
The fire was catching quick due to the little scraps of fabric that were falling into the fire and even the good pieces of fabric got caught in the fire as well. Everytime a scrap of fabric fell it would catch on fire.
The employees tried to escape through the doors but found that they were all locked. The reason for them being locked was because the owners of the factory would did not want the employees to leave work early to go home or to have breaks.
The firefighters come and they hold out nets to catch the young girls and boys that are falling.
Some of the girls did not survive because they either bounced off of the net or the dying from hitting the pavement with a big thud.
The fire was over in nearly 18 minutes. Forty-nine workers had burned to death or been suffocated by smoke, 36 were dead in the elevator shaft and 58 died from jumping to the sidewalks. With two more dying later from their injuries, a total of 145 people were killed by the fire.
