In 500 B.C. several Ionian Greek city-states were revolting against Persia. The Ionians asked Athens for help. Athens sent help and were defeated. King Darius was angry with Athens for helping with the revolt and declared war.
Causes of the War
The Greeks used a phalanx formation, and won against Perisa. A famous Greek runner died after yelling "Rejoice, we conquer!"
Battle of Marathon 491-490 B.C.
Sparta joined Greece. Spartans were slaughtered and their king Leonidas was killed. Athenians retreated and Athens was burned to the ground.
Battle of Thermopylae 480 B.C.
Battle of Slamis 480 B.C.
Athens attacks Persia' s navy. Persian ships were much larger than Athens and couldn't move around the small channel.
Battle of Plataea 479 B.C.
Athens and Sparta join together to defeat the Persians. Xerxes flees back home, and Greece is victorious.
Athens and Sparta split up after the war and create to different leagues. The Athenians created the Delian League. The Spartans created the Peloponnesian League .
