Jonas, an 11-year-old young boy living in a utopian society. Jonas is about to turn 12, and about to become an adult.
At age 12 the elders in your community have a selection to decide the job you will be given as an adult. Jonas isn't sure what he is going to be and worried he won't get a good job.
During the selection, Jonas's number is skipped and he is called last to be the Receiver of Memory, one of the best jobs you can have. The receiver of memory is given to a brave, caring man.
Jonas starts training because his position is so big. He is allowed to ask many questions that other people can not ask. He learns about life before the utopia and watches his father perform a release to find out it is a "murder"
Jonas wants to help Gabe, a baby his father has been nurturing, by using his memories. Gabe's life has been threatened and together they hope to escape.
Jonas and Gabe go through many things and are almost at death because of starvation, cold, and fear. The only thing they have is each other. Jonas uses one of his memories, a red sled, and the two sled down a hill together to find their family waiting for them. They have made it back home safe.
