In this chapter, Cassie started to act really nice to Lillian Jean and carried her books around for her. Lillian Jean began to trust her, she told Cassie secrets about herself, friends, and family that she didn't tell anyone else. One day Cassie tricked Lillian Jean into walking deep into the forest where she then smacked her books on the ground and beat her up. Cassie made her apologize and told Lillian Jean that if she told her father about this then she would tell everyone all of the secrets she had been told.
In this chapter, Papa, Mr. Morrison, and Stacey went on a trip to Vicksburg for the Wallace Store boycott. On their way home, the Wallace car pulled up and shot Papa. Papa fell down and when Stacey couldn't hold on to the mule, the wagon rolled over Papa's leg, breaking it. After the incident, Stacey blamed himself for what happened to Papa because he couldn't hold on to Jack, the mule.
In this chapter, Mr. Morrison takes the children for a wagon ride. On their way home, their was a pickup truck coming towards the wagon. Caleb Wallace came out of the truck, and he was talking about how Mr. Morrison hurt his brother, and that he should get Mr. Morrison back for it. Mr. Morrison respond by asking if he was going to move his truck. Caleb Wallace refused, so Mr. Morrison calmly picked up the truck and brought it to the side of the road. Everyone was shocked by Mr. Morrison's actions. Mr. Morrison showed great strength and excellence to the children in a terrible situation.
