Mathilde was a very young and pretty woman, she always thought that she was poor. She always thought of having very rich rooms, nice carpets, and things that would classify as being wealthy.
When her husband came back from work, he also brought a letter with him that was for Mathilde. It was an invitation for the ball however, Mathilde was sad she didnt have a jewel. so she went to her old classmate Madame Forestier to borrow a diamond necklace.
After the ball was done Mathilde was outraged because she ended up losing the necklace. When she came home she and her husband started looking everywhere for the necklace. They found nothing. Her husband told Mathilde to give Madame an excuse for not having the necklace.

Loisel started to give IOUs to the people he borrowed money from to buy another necklace. They ended up buying the necklace for 36,000 francs and gave it to Madame.
Mathilde and her husband had to work hard work for ten years to pay off all the debts they had borrowed. Mathilde became a stronger woman after that.
When Mathilde was at the park she sees Madame there to. She's goes up to her and told her what really happened with the necklace. But then Madame says "my dear dear Mathilde'' it was only at the most 500 francs.
